Reliance Jio GigaFiber No 1 in Internet speed: Netflix

Reliance Jio GigaFiber, yet to be available commercially, has topped the list for highest speed provided by Internet service providers (ISPs) in India, according to a Netflix report. With a speed of 3.61 Mbps for the month of February, Reliance Jio GigaFiber beat Airtel, Spectranet and 7 Star Digital among others. Ever since its launch in September 2018, Jio GigaFiber has dominated the Netflix "ISP Speed Index" chart with speeds consistently above 3.41 Mbps. "Netflix ISP Speed Index is our monthly update on which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide the best prime time Netflix streaming experience," the company said in a statement. Jio GigaFiber was followed by 7 Star Digital which is providing a speed of 3.43 Mbps. Next in the list were Spectranet and Airtel with 3.34 Mbps and 3.29 Mbps of speed. Rest of the major players were ranked further below, with ACT Fibernet following right after Airtel with 3.03 Mbps. Hathway, Alliance Broadband, MTNL and BSNL have been put on the seventh, 11th, 13th and 14th spots respectively. Regarding India's global ranking in the broadband segment, Reliance Industries (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani in October said that the country was currently ranked low at 134th position and RIL's Jio would take the ranking to the top three. "Jio is determined to move India to among the top three in fixed-line broadband." Ambani had in July, at RIL's Annual General Meeting, announced that it would launch fibre-to-the-home broadband services, JioGigaFiber. "We will now extend fiber connectivity to homes, merchants, small and medium enterprises and large enterprises simultaneously across 1,100 cities to offer the most advanced fiber-based broadband connectivity solutions," he had said. Smokers notice health warnings more on plain packs

Health warnings on plain-packaged cigarettes affect smokers more than those marked on branded packs, finds a new study. Warnings used on standardised packs were novel and larger than those on fully-branded packs - and displayed pictorial images on both main display areas, the team said. "Consistent with the broad objectives of standardised packaging, our research found that it was associated with increased warning salience, and thoughts about risks and quitting," said lead researcher Crawford Moodie from the University of Stirling in Scotland. "This study adds to the growing body of evidence that standardised packaging reduces the appeal of tobacco products," said George Butterworth, Senior Policy Manager at Cancer Research, UK. The study showed that smokers who bought standardised packs were more likely to have noticed and read the warnings compared to those who had never used standardised packs. Those who bought standardised packs also thought about the health risks of smoking and quitting and were more likely to have noticed a stop smoking sign on packs.

Sugary drinks may increase risk of early death

Women who drink sugar sweetened beverages are at an increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases, researchers have warned.

The study, led by Harvard University researchers, found that drinking 1-4 sugary drinks per month was linked with a one per cent increased risk of death and 2-6 drinks per week with a six per cent increase. The increased early death risk linked with sugar-sweetened beverages consumption was more pronounced among women than among men, the findings, published in the journal Circulation, showed. "Our results provide further support to limit intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and to replace them with other beverages, preferably water, to improve overall health and longevity," said lead author Vasanti Malik. However, drinking one artificially-sweetened beverage per day instead of carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks, and sports drinks lowered the risk of premature death. For the study, the team analysed data from 80,647 women and 37,716 men. The study supports policies to limit marketing of sugary beverages to children and adolescents and for implementing soda taxes. Sugar-sweetened beverages should be no more than 10 per cent of daily calories from added sugars. Sugar-sweetened beverages intake is also on the rise in developing countries, spurred by urbanisation and beverage marketing, said the team.

Ways to prep your skin for summer heat

The harsh summer heat can spoil your skin. Don't forget to moisturize and keep yourself hydrated, say experts.

Krishnan Venkateshwaran, Chief Scientist - ITC Ltd R&D, Dermafique and Sangeeta Velaskar, Vice President and Head, Medical Services & R & D from Kaya Limited, have shared tips to save your skin this summer.

*Don't forget to moisturise: You need to use a light moisturiser when the weather is warm. Pick a non-greasy and lightweight moisturiser (pick one with SPF for daytime use) that will help to lock in the essential moisture of your skin.

*Tone your skin: Toners are a must-have during the summer months. A good toner keeps your skin oil-free and clean. It also reduces the appearance of pores. When applying toner, pay attention to your T-zone as it is the part of your face that secretes the maximum oil during summer.

*Keep yourself hydrated: Drink lots of water and don't forget to carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. Keep sipping from your bottle. This is important to keep your skin hydrated, flush out toxins from your body, and feel refreshed during the hot summer days.

*Exfoliate: Regular exfoliation should be a part of the skincare routine irrespective of the season. Those with sensitive skin need to be careful while exfoliating as compared to those with a combination or normal skin.

*Minimal make-up: Bare minimum make-up should be preferred in summers, as too much make-up would clog the pores and result in breakouts. Products with SPF should be used.

*Summer friendly lotion: One needs to use a lotion which absorbs fast into the skin as compared to the greasy body butters for winter. Winter lotions would provide the skin an oily look therefore they need to be changed with time.

*Since the sun can be extremely drying, keep them soft and smooth by using a rich lip balm with SPF 15 or higher. Use a bottle of mist packed with a antioxidants and nutrients to soothe and hydrate the skin on your face and body, especially when you are outdoors and in the sun.

Tesla unveils Model Y, set to launch in 2020

Electric Vehicle (EV) maker has unveiled its mid-size electric SUV, the Model Y, slated to be launched in 2020.

This is Elon Musk's fifth vehicle to hit the roads. The long range version of the Model Y would travel 300 miles on a single charge and will sell for $47,000 while the $60,000 performance version would be capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

"Like Model 3, Model Y requires no keys, but instead connects to your smartphone for seamless entry and exit, with a single 15-inch touchscreen interface inside for all of the car's controls. Model Y also connects with the Tesla Mobile app for unique, easy-to-access features like remote unlock, Summon, remote pre-conditioning, location tracking, Speed Limit Mode and much more," the company said in a statement on Friday.

The SUV is roomier than a Tesla Model 3 and can seat seven.

The EV maker would also sell an all-wheel-drive dual motor version for $51,000 along with a performance version for $60,000 -- both of which would be available in the autumn of 2020.

The cheaper, standard range version with a range of 230 miles won't be available until 2021, Musk said. It would sell for $39,000.

The vehicle is designed to be the safest mid-size SUV. Built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, the low centre of gravity, rigid body structure and large crumple zones provide unparalleled protection, the company added.

The EV maker recently introduced the long-promised $35,000 "standard range" Model 3 but the release was overshadowed by Tesla's decision to close most of its stores and shift to online sales in order to cut operating costs.

FDA to curb flavoured e-cigarette sales to teenagers

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed to curb sales of flavored e-cigarettes to teenagers.

The health regulator on Wednesday said that it is proposing to end all flavored electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) products such as electronic cigarettes, except tobacco, mint and menthol-flavored products.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 3.6 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes last year.

"Evidence shows that youth are especially attracted to flavored e-cigarette products, and that minors are able to access these products from both brick-and-mortar retailers, as well as online, despite federal restrictions on sales to anyone under 18," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, said in a statement.

"With these concerns in mind, today, we're advancing our policies aimed at preventing youth access to, and appeal of, flavoured e-cigarettes and cigars."

The new proposed policy also subjects all manufacturers and retailers to FDA enforcement for selling certain flavoured ENDS products without authorization.

The FDA had previously threatened to ban most flavored e-cigarettes in 2017 but did not take any enforcement moves.

However, with the new policy, FDA intends to priorities its enforcement to focus on protecting youth from becoming addicted to nicotine.

It believes, at the same time, "that ENDS products still hold promise to help transition currently addicted adult smokers to potentially less harmful sources of nicotine", Gottlieb said.

The health regulator also proposed pre-market applications for all flavored e-cigarette products that continue to be sold by August 8, 2021.

76% Indian companies hit by cyber attacks in 2018

Over 76 per cent organisations in India were hit by cyber attacks in 2018 as IT security continued to be a major issue across the globe, global cyber security major Sophos said on Wednesday.

According to Sophos' "7 Uncomfortable Truths of Endpoint Security" survey, IT managers are more likely to catch cyber criminals on their organisation's servers and networks than anywhere else.

IT managers discovered 39 per cent of their most significant cyber attacks on their organisation's servers and 34.5 per cent on its networks.

The survey was conducted on 3,000 IT decision-makers from mid-sized businesses in 12 countries including the US, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, India and South Africa.

More than 18 per cent threats discovered in India are on mobile devices, which is almost double than the global average.

Also, 92 per cent Indian IT managers wished they had a stronger team in place to properly detect, investigate and respond to security incidents.

"Server security stakes are at an all-time high with servers being used to store financial, employee, proprietary and other sensitive data. Today, IT managers need to focus on protecting business-critical servers to stop cyber criminals from getting on to the network," Sunil Sharma, Managing Director, Sales at Sophos India and SAARC, said in a statement.

"They can't ignore endpoints because most cyber attacks start there, yet a higher than expected amount of IT managers still can't identify how threats are getting into the system and when.

Microsoft on Thursday said that its Windows 10 operating system (OS) is now running on more than 800 million active devices worldwide, one step closer to its goal of 1 billion Windows 10 users.

"Thank you to all our customers and partners for helping us achieve 800 million Windows 10 devices and the highest customer satisfaction in the history of Windows," Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Modern Life and Devices Group tweeted.

It took almost three years and eight months for Windows 10 to reach the goal of 800 million after it was released in July 2015, Xinhua news agency reported.

Microsoft had originally expected to attain the goal of having Windows 10 installed on 1 billion devices globally in three years after its release, but it missed the target last year.

The company announced in September 2018 that over 700 million devices were running Windows 10, indicating it had won 100 million new users in less than six months.
